PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of combustion, by providing an air injection port upstream to an intake valve and supplying pressurized air from a pump to inject the air through the port in connection with the opening and closing of the intake valve to smoothly scavenge the exhaust gas and cause the mixture in a working chamber to swirl. CONSTITUTION:When an intake valve 6 is opened in the intake process of an engine, the large-diameter part 18 of a valve spindle is simultaneously moved down to open a hole 22 provided in a valve spindle guide 19. As a result, pressurized air supplied through a discharge passage 17 from a pump 16 driven by the engine or an electric motor is drastically injected into a working chamber 4 through the space (communication passage) 21 between the inside surface of the valve spindle guide 19 and the small-diameter part 20 of the valve spindle, a groove 22 and an injection port 24, so that exhaust gas remaining in the working chamber is discharged through an exhaust valve. When the intake valve 6 is further opened, the hole 22 is closed by the large-diameter part 18. When the intake valve 6 has begun to close, the hole 22 is opened again so that the mixture in the working chamber 4 is caused to swirl by the flow of the air injected through the port 24. |
