A lighting system for use in underground mines comprises an hydraulic fluid powered generator (20, 21) mounted on each mine roof support and a lamp powered by the generator. The generators are connected in series by fluid feed line (17), separate from that of the roof supports, and a common line or separate return line (14). Each generator comprises a turbine (20) and an alternator (21) to charge a battery (23) which powers an inverter (24) which in turn powers a fluorescent lamp (25), the generator (20), battery (23), inverter (24) and lamp (25) being housed in a common flameproof housing (19) mounted on the roof support. <IMAGE> |
