A variable-opening valve assembly for an internal combustion engine comprises a poppet valve 5 and a movable valve seat 3 which is slidable in an insert 2 in a cylinder head 1. A spring 8 urges the seat 3 to follow the opening movement of the valve 5 until arrested by a stop 7, the position of which is adjustable. A rack 22 connected to an accelerator pedal of a vehicle fitted with the engine engages a pinion 19 to move a cross- bar 15 and rods 6. The valve seat 3 has apertures therein for flow of gases therethrough.
