The flameless electrochemical heating device, in particular heating pad, has a container with a single, divided or subdivided electrochemical (galvanic) cell. Metal pieces serve as the anode of the cell and have, over 15 to 85% of their surface, a coating consisting of a more noble metal. This coating forms the cathode of the cell. As soon as the electrolytic system is in a conducting solution, parts of the coating react with the metal anode parts, whereupon heat is generated. It is also possible for the anodes to be coated only at this stage by providing a salt of the (nobler) cathode metal in the solution. The heating device has a high ductility and a high thermal yield.
