An optical recording medium includes a substrate (S3) carrying first and second adjacent thin layers (A, B) or different materials, which, upon marking with an energy beam, form a marked area having optical properties different from the optical properties of the unmarked area. The optical properties of the marked areas has contrast sufficiently different from the optical properties of the unmarked area so that the marked area can be reliably sensed. The first thin layer comprises a metal and the second thin layer comprises a metal or a semiconductor selected from the group comprising germanium or silicon.
