A process for removing heavy metal ions from the physiological fluids utilizing immobilized chelating agents is disclosed. The chelating agents are positioned on the opposite side of an ultrafiltration membrane from blood flowing across the retentive filter surface of the membrane. The apparatus (10) for carrying out this process comprises a membrane ultrafilter (2), a flow path directing said fluid to contact the retentive skin of said membrane (22), and positioned in intimate contact with the opposite side of said membrane (22), a mass of chelating agent (24).
