A process for the preparation of an absorbent material for organic liquids, in particular oil, by treating plant fibres with a hydrophobising agent is described, which is characterised in that a fibre-like material which essentially consists of sized or unsized plant fibres is impregnated with an acrylate prepolymer or alkyd prepolymer or polyester prepolymer which is liquid or dissolved in solvent, as well as with customary additives, in order to obtain a molecule-enlarging reaction in the presence of heat, the prepolymer being used in an amount such that the impregnated fibre-like material contains 0.5 to 30% by weight of acrylate or alkyd or polyester resin, and in that the impregnated fibre-like material is heated in order to cause a molecule enlargement of the prepolymer, for example by means of crosslinking and/or curing. |
