The gear box for a machine tool consists of a motor driving a gear train. The output shaft of this train is extended and incorporates the discs of a brake. The calipers of the brake are fixed to a gear wheel. The gear wheel is connected back to a gear on the motor shaft and the gear ratios are such that some slip occurs between the discs and the calipers of the brake. This imposes a resisting torque on the output shaft when the brake is applied. Any free play in the gear train can be taken up by applying the brake by degrees.
