Filter unit for hydraulic systems with automatic cleaning by back-flushing, has a reservoir containing sufficient fluid for the cleaning cycle, with electrically operated change-over valves mounted on a central panel. Hydraulic fluid from the external pump flows to the filter, the inlet line having an electrically-operated change-over valve. There is similar valve in the outlet line. A hydraulic accumulator fills from the pressure inlet line through a control valve. A by-pass line around the filter has a control valve opening at high pressure only. Reliable operation of the cleaning cycle, reduced downtime for the cleaning operation, safety and case of control.
