In the case of a bumper for motor vehicles, which has a support supported by parts which are fixed with respect to the vehicle, upstream of which bumper there is mounted an energy absorber which is made of a foamed material, is preferably lined with an elastic cover and the deformation resistance of which is altered, in a continuous or step-by-step manner, by variation of the foam density and/or by weakening the material, it is proposed that, with inclusion of the assigned deformation resistance of the support, the energy absorber exhibits in the middle of the bumper a minimum deformation resistance which increases constantly towards the supporting points in an essentially even bumper and which increases abruptly in the region of the supporting points in the case of a markedly backswept bumper, after which point it decreases again in the direction of the unsupported ends of the bumper.
