In a process for reprocessing residues produced in coal hydrogenation to give pasting oil and other valuable materials, the bottom product of the hot separator after the flash evaporation is treated with a diluent originating from coal such that heavy oils and soft bitumen from the bottom product dissolve, but the hard bitumen does not. The diluent enriched with soft bitumen is separated from the bitumen-containing bottom product, the diluent is expelled from the filtrate and the remaining soft bitumen together with the residual oils is used as pasting oil.
