The invention relates to a sealing arrangement which can be used for stuffing boxes or the like. This sealing arrangement has at least one sleeve-shaped sealing element for sealing off a wall relative to an axially movable and/or rotatable cylinder which passes through the wall. One end of the sealing element is attached in leakproof fashion to the wall while its inside rests in sealing fashion, under prestress, against the cylinder. In this arrangement, the pressure difference to be sealed off acts on the outer side of the sealing element. To make it suitable for high operating temperatures and dynamic loads in stuffing boxes or the like and to obtain a sufficiently high contact pressure in the annular sealing area, the sealing element is made of metal and an essentially cylindrical clamping region at least three times as wide as the annular sealing region is provided adjacent to the said region, the sealing region being stressed at least to the elastic limit by strain during assembly and the clamping region sharing in this deformation.
