In the case of a gas-blast circuitbreaker, a switching chamber (1) is provided which has switching elements (2, 3, 6) and has a blowing device which is arranged therein, consists of a piston (10) and a cylinder (9), and contains the switching elements (2, 3, 6). The blowing device compresses extinguishing gas during the switching-off process, and, during separation of the switching elements (2, 3 and 6) initiates an extinguishing gas flow, in order to blow out the arc which has been struck. In order to increase the rated current carrying capacity of the circuitbreaker (switch) parts (2, 3, 6) through which current flows, the compression space (8) of the blowing device (9, 10) is connected, in the switched-on position of the switching elements (2, 3, 6), to the other gas space of the switching chamber (1) via passages (through openings) (12, 16, 18, 19) in the moving blowing cylinder and/or in the switching elements (2, 6), in a device which is interrupted automatically at the start of the switching-off process. The passages (18, 19) can be closed, according to the invention, by means of an annular slide (20, 21) which is held in the open position via springs (25) and is moved into the closed position, during the switching-off movement, against the spring force. <IMAGE>
