For the operative treatment of varices with a laser the invention proposes a light guiding probe whose light guide is roughened on the light emergence end and surrounded by a light-permeable Teflon cap having grooves extending in the direction of its longitudinal axis. Destruction of the light guide by thermal overloading on the light emergence end is prevented by an air gap provided there between the cap and the light guide and by the provision of a metallic mass. <IMAGE>
