PURPOSE:To prepare an acetal from various aldehydes and alcohols, easily, in high yield, by using a ruthenium catalyst such as dichlorotris(phenylphosphine) ruthenium. CONSTITUTION:An acetal of formula (R is alkyl, alkenyl or aryl; R' is alcohol residue or two R's together form alkylene or polymethylene) (e.g. n-heptylaldehyde diethyl acetal) is prepared by reacting an aldehyde such as m-nitrobenzaldehyde, n-heptylaldehyde, piperonal, etc. with an alcohol such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, etc. in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, preferably dihalotris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium, (dihalotricarbonyl)ruthenium dimer, ruthenium chloride, etc. The reaction can be carried out under about neutral conditions without using a dehydration apparatus, etc. |
