Device in which one of the two objects is a rule (5) having a reflecting surface (9) of arbitrary but uniform granularity and the other of which is a graticule (4) marked with a grid of parallel and equidistant lines which are perpendicular to the displacement (f) of the rule. An emitter of light rays (2), a photo-sensitive receiver (3) and the graticule (4) are fixed in a housing (1) and disposed in a plane of reflection such that the light rays are reflected by the rule onto the receiver through the graticule. The rule is guided in a slide way (6-7) fixed to the housing. The superposition of the shadow of the grating and the light diffused by the rule produces on the receiver a luminous image which is reproduced in a cyclic manner for each step forward of the rule corresponding to the spacing of the grid, which phenomenon is representative of its displacement. <IMAGE>
