A cement applicator roll for use in applying solvent-based adhesive to flat workpieces, e.g. shoe soles, is made from closed cell cross-linked polyethylene foam. The method comprises cutting a cylindrical portion (4) from a sheet of the foam, applying heat to surfaces of the portion to heat seal them and prevent the absorption of solvent, and fixing the portion on a spindle (8). Longer rolls are made by assembling a plurality of the cylindrical portions (4) on the spindle, and the portions may be clamped between end plates (10) of the spindle (8). <IMAGE> |
