PURPOSE:The space between a tightly sealed vessel containing food and a container of low microwave dielectric loss is filled with a fluid of high dielectric loss and they are irradiated with microwaves to effect sterilization, thus preventing the tightly sealed vessel from bursting. CONSTITUTION:A tightly sealed vessel 1 that is made of a material of low microwave dielectric loss such as polystyrene and contains a food 2 is contained in a container 4 made of a material of low dielectric loss and the space between the outer wall surface of the vessel 1 and the inner surface of the container 4 is filled with a liquid of high dielectric loss 5 such as water. Then, the opening of the container 4 is covered with the cover 6 and packing 7 and tightly closed with bolts 8 and nuts 9. Microwaves of 300-30,000MHz frequency are irradiated from the outside of the container 4 to heat the liquid to 60-150 deg.C to effect sterilization. Then, the container is opened, the liquid is flown out and the vessel is taken out and cooled down as soon as possible to room temperature. |
