PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a small backing truck device by installing only a position detector such as a photoreceptor, etc., on the truck and providing a running motor separately. CONSTITUTION:A backing strip 2 is attached to an expected weld zone of a steel plate 1 to be welded. The steel plate is pressed from below through the backing strip 2 by a backing copper plate 5 attached to a truck 3 through a spring. A light receiver 13 is installed on the copper backing plate 5 as a position detector. Welding is started using a welding machine 8 from the center of longitudinal direction of the backing copper plate 5. When welding is advanced and the arc reached the detectable range of the light receiver 13, a detection signal is sent to a running control device 17. A wire rope is wound by a motor 7 at a speed faster than welding speed. When the light of arc becomes not received any more, the truck is run winding the rope at a speed slower than welding speed. Thus, automatic welding is performed by repeating high speed running and low speed running installing a running motor 7 separately. |
