Coke oven door mfr. involves using a rigid metal strip to which is fixed a channel holding a strip of soft filled asbestos acting as a secondary seal. The asbestos projects below the level of the bottom of the metal strip so that forcing the strip into contact with the door frame ensures that the soft sealing strip is compressed and hence that a leak tight seal is obtd. Used for the sealing of coke oven doors against heat loss, gas leakage or air entry into the retort.
