The process for stripping fibre optic cables includes firstly soaking the end of the cable in a solvent which softens the outer sleeve. A reservoir of the solvent receives the end of the cable, and a joint folds down on to the cable such that it is held down in the correct place. A pad on the lower surface of the joint grips the cable. After soaking, the cable is transferred to a second position so that it lies on a felt pad. A second jaw folds down over it with a second felt pad. A screw allows this jaw to be fastened down while the cable is withdrawn, leaving the bare fibres clear. The device is mounted to slide parallel to the fibre axis on a block. The time for the entire operation is in the order of a minute.
