PURPOSE:To prevent the dimensional distortion of a glass fiber caused by the turbulent flow of the environmental gas in the spinning of molten glass through a nozzle, by placing a pipe having a gas flow checking orifice at the forming zone below the nozzle. CONSTITUTION:Molten glass homogenized in a platinum crucible 1 by deaeration and stirring is extruded through the nozzle 10, drawn, cooled with the gas-flow checking pipes 12, 13, and spun to obtain a glass fiber. In the above procedure, the region between the nozzle 10 and the zone where the glass is solidified to the fiber having desired diameter is the space S composed of a gas-flow checking pipe 12 and a gas-flow checking pipe 13 having a gas-flow checking orifice 14. Since there is no generation of turbulent flow in the narrow forming space S, the influence of the turbulent gas flow in the forming and solidifying region below the nozzle 10 to the diameter of the glass fiber can be eliminated and a glass fiber having excellent dimensional accuracy can be manufactured. |
