A control mechanism is inserted between the distributor shaft (11) and the distributor rotor (17), which feeds the high voltage pulse to the respective outer electrode (14). Its eccentric pin (26) describes the orbit (32) of an epicycloid, so that the angular velocity of the distributor rotor (17) at the firing point is less than its mean angular velocity. The control mechanism takes up little space and can be incorporated at low cost into existing ignition distributors. <IMAGE>
