PURPOSE:To provide a light weight cylinder block for a vehicle engine by a method wherein a main body having a cylinder bore is of a welded steel plate structure, and a crank case is of a light metal which may easily be formed or a molded product of synthetic resin. CONSTITUTION:Main body 4 of a cylinder block is constructed such that it is composed of a rectangular cylindrical body 10 formed to show a rectangular cylindrical form with a bottom part having a rectangular sectional shape by a deep drawing work of a steel plate having a thickness of about 3mm. and a cylindrical body 12 forming a cylinder bore. The cylindrical body 12 is fitted to a punched hole formed in the top surface of the rectangular cylinder 10, and its fitted surfaces are welded by a beam welding part 80, while the crank case 6 is of an aluminum alloy casting which is composed of a bearing housing 26, bearing metal 30 and a crank case wall etc., and a lower part of the main body 4 of the cylinder block is casted at the upper end of the crank case wall 32 to form an internal assembly therewith. |
