The invention relates to a stretcher, especially for ambulance vehicles. The stretcher (1) has a retaining cushion (4) for retaining purposes in the event of abrupt movements in the longitudinal direction of an ambulance, which cushion (4) holds the patient. The retaining cushion (4) is connected to a retaining belt (5) which is in turn operatively connected to the catch (10) of an automatic roll-up system (3). The automatic roll-up system itself includes a safety belt (7) which is connected, preferably automatically, to the vehicle floor (11) on loading the stretcher into a supporting device of an ambulance. The relationships are such that in the event of a sudden tensile force in the retaining belt, for example on braking or in a collision with an obstacle, i.e. on exceeding a predetermined deceleration value, the belt locks the automatic roll-up system (3) via its catch (10), so that patient and stretcher are reliably retained. <IMAGE>
