Various embodiments of improved guillotine shears of the upward-cutting type are provided by the invention. In all embodiments, a first energy-absorbing device is provided for absorbing the kinetic energy of the top cutter head when the latter approaches a cutting position, and a second energy-absorbing device is provided which absorbs the kinetic energy of the top and bottom cutter head when they return into a rest position.
