According to conventional technology, the specified standards for the L and R stereo signals in stereophonic devices for broadcast or television reception or for recording and/or for replaying audio or video recordings requires corresponding decoding even when this is not required for technical or economic reasons in special cases. In those cases, there is as a result additional circuit complexity. The object of the invention consists in preventing such additional circuit complexity for actually unnecessary decoding of the transmitted sum and difference signals in accordance with the L and R output signals. This object is achieved for the devices initially mentioned by directly picking up and forwarding stereophonic signals of the type of the M = L + R sum signal and of the S = L - R difference signal by means of connecting sockets and connecting plugs (6, 9) at the M and S decoder (3). <IMAGE>
