In order to allow the driver of a motor vehicle to operate the accelerator with a fully relaxed position of the muscles and nerves of the right foot and at the same time to achieve a petrol saving of up to 10% through the rest position of the accelerator pedal, the accelerator pedal is merely provided with a step which allows the shoe to engage. The foot's own weight is thereby sufficient to be able to steplessly arrest the accelerator pedal. The shoe is transferred from the operating position for the braking process without the slightest resistance. In the process the accelerator pedal springs back. Fig. 1 shows an upright accelerator pedal (11) with step (12) according to the invention and the vehicle floor (16) of a vehicle. For the functioning of this invention, the accelerator pedal (11) together with step (12), shoe (13) and vehicle floor (16) must form one unit. In this the shoe tip (14) is engaged on the step (12) and the shoe heel (15) placed on the vehicle floor (16). <IMAGE>
