A protective intermediate sole for footwear is described, for use in footwear such as safety boots or shoes. The intermediate sole is adapted, in plan view as well as in profile, to the contours of the sole of the footwear and has a heel region, a central foot region and a ball region. In the central foot region, there is provided a downwardly projecting rib which extends essentially in the longitudinal direction and which stiffens the intermediate sole in the central foot region and serves to deflect sharp objects from the sensitive central foot region. The heel part of the intermediate sole can be provided with at least one aligning opening, e.g. with a slot for the arrangement of the intermediate sole on a correspondingly shaped projection of a heel filling piece, as a result of which the installation and the alignment of the heel filling piece together with the intermediate sole in the sole of the footwear is simplified and improved.
