The anti-atomic air raid shelter buried underground adjacent to a building consisting of a horizontal steel cylinder (1) with dished ends (2) is made up of a set of modules (1') with reinforcing rings (11). Sealing plates (8,9) divide the cylinder into a main compartment (10), and a decontamination compartment (6), the latter having a vertical reinforced concrete tube (5) projecting from it, with a cover (7) above ground level, forming a manhole. The tube is anchored to the main cylinder by hooks projecting from the cylinder, embedded in the concrete. Through the concrete wall of the tube are passages for air, a periscope, aerials etc. The whole is enclosed by a bed of sand, and a covering layer of earth, with drainage channels (25) incorporated. The connections (4) with the building includes a resilient joint to permit movement between it and the cylinder.
|
