In a process for producing iron in a reactor, scrap iron and carbon-containing material are added to molten iron in a reactor. A space is provided in the reactor above the molten iron. Gaseous oxygen is then injected into the molten iron in order to stir it and to oxidise the carbon-containing material, mainly to form CO. Furthermore, oxygen is injected into the space above the molten iron in the reactor in order to oxidise the CO gas to CO2. The scrap iron supplied is melted with the heat produced by oxidation and the exhaust gas, which is at a high temperature, is used to preheat the scrap iron. The invention furthermore relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.
