The invention relates to a method for determining the behaviour of casting slags used in continuous casting by producing a relative velocity between two wall elements, in particular a crucible holding the oxidic melt and a cylindrical rod dipping into the said crucible and by recording the torque (shear stress) as a measurement of the frictional resistance of the slag. In order to determine in the laboratory the behaviour of casting slags as observed between an oscillating continuous casting mould and the strand shell, the invention proposes that the relative velocity be produced by moving at least one of the elements in the mould and that a periodic movement be superimposed on a uniform movement. <IMAGE>
