In the device the maximum information density is controlled by the closeness with which adjacent information tracks can be packed with acceptably low cross-talk on read-out. To reduce cross-talk, and hence increase information density, adjacent tracks are situated at different levels separated by a distance chosen in relation to the reading wavelength so that the optical phase differences generated when the edge parts of a read spot fall on adjacent tracks are such that they make little contribution to the phase differences generated by the read spot on the wanted track. |
