PURPOSE:To obtain high purity alkali hydroxide from an aqueous soln. of alkali metallic halide with high current efficiency by using a cation exchange fluorocarbon membrane having specified atomic groups as the side chains. CONSTITUTION:A cation exchange fluorocarbon membrane having atomic groups represented by formula I as the side chains or part of the side chains is manufactured. In formula I, M is H, a metal or ammonium, and each R1 and R2 is 1-4C alkyl. The membrane is obtd. by reacting a membraneous fluorocarbon structure having -CF2SO2C, -CF2SO2Br or -CF2Br as functional groups with an org. compound having a chemical structure represented by formula II. The reaction temp. is about 50-100 deg.C, and the reaction time is about 1-100hr. The preferred cation exchange membrane has a multilayer structure composed of a surface layer contg. more than half of the cation exchange groups and having 1-100, preferably 5- 30mum thickness and of a remaining layer. |
