<p>For driving a tunnel in water-bearing, unsupported ground, a shield is used in combination with a tight tunnel lining. The shield has a pressure-resistant working chamber in which the excavating tool works. The working chamber is arranged in the front part of the shield, is open towards the heading face and is tightly closed against the rear tunnel. The water accumulating on the rock side is caught and held in this working chamber. The solid excavated material from the working chamber is pumped out of the working chamber with the water, if need be while feeding or pumping over additional water, and is conveyed out of the tunnel.</p> |
