A medical diagnostic instrument, such as an otoscope or an ophthalmoscope, is provided with battery-operated electric lighting. In order to avoid undesired discharging of the battery, the on switch for the lighting lamp (13, L) is designed as a contact sensor (18, Sp) and is connected to the storage circuit of the lighting lamp via a timer circuit which automatically disconnects the lighting lamp at a predetermined interval after the release of the contact sensor. <IMAGE>
