The object of the invention is to design such an arrangement to make it especially robust, resistant to malfunctions and cheap, so that it can also be used economically for relatively small containers. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the pivot arm is provided with at least one articulated joint, in the region of which at least one stop is provided which prevents the full extension of the pivot arm, so that the two sections adjoining the articulated joint form an angle of less than 180 DEG in the extended position of the roller. This arrangement ensures that the sections of the pivot arm connected by the articulated joint are folded together during reciprocation of the roller on the refuse to be compacted, so that the projecting length of the pivot arm is modified in this extremely simple fashion and the roller can execute its movement on the refuse in the container. <IMAGE>
