In the proposed method for electrolytically polishing a long, flat or slightly curved surface on an object by passing a cathode over said surface from one end to the other, the method is improved with respect to earlier methods in that the size of the active cathode area in the direction parallel to the longitudinal extension of the surface of the object to be electrolytically polished is a fraction of the longitudinal extension of the surface of the object and the cathode is passed in a stepwise fashion over the surface of the object, the length of said steps being substantially less than the size of the active cathode surface parallel to the longitudinal extension of the surface of the object.
