A tape-cassette recording apparatus is provided with a device for recording variously encoded address signals on a magnetic tape and with a device for searching the tape for a specified address during playback. Before an item of information is recorded, an address signal selected according to the type of information to be recorded is first of all recorded on the tape, whereupon the information is recorded after this address. When the code of an address signal is specified upon playback, the recording tape is moved at relatively high search speed, and when one of the address signals which has the specified code is detected, the tape-running speed is reduced to the playback speed in order to play back the information following the address signal. When, after completion of the information playback, the next address signal is detected, the forward tape-running speed is again increased to the search speed, in order to determine the next address signal bearing the specified code. Consequently, all items of information of the desired type, according to choice, are played back. In the case of such a cassette recorder, a device for displaying the code of the specified address signal before its actual recording on the tape is provided. The specified address signal is not actually recorded until an enter button is operated.
