A furnace installation for combustion of solid fuels, such as e.g. pieces of wood, wood chips, turf, straw or the like, has above an ash grate (10) a shelf surface (5) which is approximately as wide as the incoming-air opening (6) of the furnace installation. This shelf surface (5) begins shortly behind the incoming-air opening (6) and extends as far as the rear wall of the furnace installation. The air flowing in is divided by a control flap (8) into a primary air-flow above the shelf surface (5) and a secondary air-flow below the shelf surface (5). This gives rise to a two-stage combustion. Furthermore, the fire is prevented from going out on refilling the furnace installation because a material deflection plate (4) is arranged above the incoming-air opening (6). <IMAGE>
