A method and apparatus for interrupting the operation of a slurry heating furnace is disclosed. The interuption apparatus includes cokinq detecting means, first controlling means, second controlling means, furnace temperature detecting means and third controlling means. The slurry, which flows through heating tubes extending through the body of the heating furnace, contains solid (coal), liquid (solvent) and gas (hydrogen gas) phases. To interrupt the operation of the furnace, the first controlling means first stops the burner of the furnace upon the coking detecting means detecting the presence of coking, and then the second controlling means stops the supply of the solid and liquid phases. However, the gas phase is made to continue to flow through the heating tubes until the furnace temperature detecting means has detected that the furnace temperature has fallen below a safe level, at which time the third controlling means halts the flow of the gas phase. |
