The invention relates to a self-tapping multipurpose screw having at least one thread turn of approximately triangular profile of constant height on an essentially cylindrical shank which terminates in a tip. In order, in the case of said multipurpose screw, to provide a tap-shamfer zone suitable for all materials, the thread turn in the initial portion, adjoining the tip, of constant height over a plurality of turns is designed with a smaller vertex angle than in the subsequent shank portion.
