PURPOSE:To enable the setting of the rotational frequency of a rotary machine rotated by the steam of the exhaust gas turbine of a ship and economize energy, by coupling an induction motor to the shaft of the rotary machine to operate the motor as an auxiliary motor or electricity generator depending on the change in the quantity of the steam. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gas turbine 1 is rotated by steam generated by the exhaust gas of a ship's Diesel engine or the like. A rotary machine 2 such as a pump and an induction motor 3 are coaxially coupled to the turbine 1. The motor 3 is connected through a power supply cable 4 and a circuit breaker 5 to a distribution line in the ship so that the motor is connected to a main electricity generator and an electric load. To start the turbine 1 and the rotary machine 2 by the induction motor 3, electric power is supplied from the main electricity generator to the motor to increase its rotational frequency from zero and finally continue its rotation at rated torque A. When the exhaust gas turbine 1 begins to bear the torque of the motor 3 as a result of the rise in the output of the turbine, the torque of the motor starts falling so that it becomes zero at a point Ns. When the rotational frequency of the motor 3 has exceeded the point Ns as a result of the further rise in the output of the turbine 1, the motor begins to function as an electricity generator.
