A process for the preparation of anilines substituted in the meta-position(s) by chlorine which comprises the catalytic hydrogenation of an aniline or nitrobenzene derivative of the general formula: ¢wherein Y represents the hydrogen atom or the oxygen atom, X1 and X2 have the same or different significances and each represents a chlorine or hydrogen atom, or an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, or aralkoxy radical, at least one of X1 and X2 representing chlorine atom, and R1, R2 and ? have the same or different significances and each represents a chlorine or hydrogen atom, or an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, or aryloxy radical at least one of the three symbols R1, R2 and R3 representing a chlorine atom! in the liquid phase, in an acid medium, under the action of heat, under pressure and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of, or comprising, a noble metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements, and in the presence of heavy metal cations, the heavy metal being in one of columns 1b to 5a of the Periodic Table of the Elements, to give an aniline derivative of the general formula hereinbefore depicted wherein Y represents the hydrogen atom, X1 and X2 are the same atoms or groups as they originally represented in that general formula, and one or more of the symbols R1, R2 and R3 in the depicted formula which originally represented a chlorine atom now represents a hydrogen atom.
|
