PRODUCTION OF HONEYCOMB TYPE FILTER

PURPOSE:To easily produce a honeycomb structure in which the ends of every other passage are closed, by a method wherein the second ends of tubular passages having the first ends closed are stopped up with an organic binder, and the second end part is immersed into a casting slip containing an inorganic powder, followed by firing. CONSTITUTION:A honeycomb structure is molded from body prepared by kneading an inorganic powder of cordierite or the like and a binder. Then, only the first end face of the structure is immersed into a casting slip prepared by adding acetone to said body, and after taking out the structure from the casting slip, the casting slip is blown off for every other tubular passage by blowing compressed air from the second end face of the structure, and the casting slip remaining in the passages is dried. Next, the second end face of the structure is immersed into a casting slip consisting solely of an organic binder such as vinyl acetate to stop up the entire part of the second end face, and the slurry is blown off by compressed air blown from the first end face so that the binder is left only at the second ends of the passages which are closed at the first ends. After drying the binder left in the structure, the second end face of the structure is immersed in the same casting slip as that used for immersing the first end face, whereby only the second ends of the passages closed at the first ends are stopped up with the casting slip containing the inorganic powder. The structure thus obtained is dried and is fired at a temperature at which only the organic binder is pyrolyzed.
