An analogue to digital converter comprising (a) an analogue input 104 (b) a digital output 105 (c) a n bit digital to analogue converter 13 for converting the digital output 104 to a respective analogue signal in (d) an error determining means 15 for comparing the analogue signal with the analogue input signal to provide an analogue error signal, E (e) a non-uniform error quantiser 3 having 2n comparators 3 all with one of their inputs being common for receiving said error signal, each of the other inputs being respectively connected to one of 2 n spaced D.C. threshold levels and where n of the comparators 3 thresholds are positive and the other n of the comparators thresholds are negative, the threshold levels being chosen such that the output code ¦Q¦ from all comparators after being OR'D is a digital representation of the error magnitude having n+1 values, the sign bit Q of which is determined by the positively or negatively thresholded comparator 3 which is closest to zero and provides an output, and (f) a clocked digital accumulator 11 for accumulating the output code ¦Q¦ from the quantiser and to provide that accumulation to said digital output 105. <IMAGE> |
