A needle-inside, catheter placement assembly (9) including needle and catheter units. The needle unit has a needle (11) joined by a flexible line (15) to a needle hub (12). The catheter unit has a catheter (23), winged catheter insertion means (31, 32), flexible tubing (27) and tube hub (29), wherein an area of reduced thickness (36) on each wing of the insertion means provides improved flexibility for the wing. The needle (11) is captured within the winged catheter insertion means when the wings (31, 32) are simultaneously held in a vertical position and axial and rotational alignment of the needle and catheter units are maintained by mechanically interlocked complementary means (16, 69) associated with the needle and lumen of the winged catheter insertion means. |
