In the iron handle is a heater cartridge contg. an axial hole for a metal tube (I) which projects into an axial holder in the soldering bit so the thermocouple is very near to the working surface of the bit. (I) is pref. made of steel, and contains one insulated wire made of constantan and spot welded to the end of (I) to make the thermocouple. Because the thermocouple is extremely near the working surface of the bit, rapid response to temp. change can be achieved and the bit kept at an accurate, desired temp. This is important, e.g. when soldering components onto printed circuit boards.
