<p>A method of reinforcing a plastics article or component with metal operates on the principle of heating the metal and then pressing it into the surface of the article, fusing or melting the material on contact. Before the reinforcement is introduced into the plastics, the surface of the plastics is provided with a trench or recess of approximately the form of the metal reinforcement. This recess may be formed in the plastics article or integrally moulded in it. Pref. the dimensions of the recess are such that the plastics material displaced by the reinforcement can be accommodated within the recess. The recess is widened at the top, so that plastics material melted and displaced when the hot reinforcement is placed in the recess can be accommodated on the shoulders of the recess. Used esp. for the prodn. of plastics palettes reinforced with a metal frame or metal members. The method enables the plastics material to be later removed and re-used, esp. in recycling, more easily than was possible by the previous method where the metal frame was pushed into the solid plastics.</p> |
