Appliance for the smoothing of garments (10) by means of steam-containing hot-air streams, in which the garments (10) hanging on clothes-hangers (13) are conveyed continuously through a tunnel-shaped treatment chamber (11) by means of a transport device (12) and the steam-containing hot-air streams are guided vertically through the treatment chamber (11). The fluff occurring during the treatment of the garments (10) is filtered out from the steam-containing hot-air streams by means of filters (18, 19). The maximum permissible contamination of the filters (18, 19) is detected mechanically by measuring instruments (24, 25) and is signalled, for example acoustically, to the operator of the appliance. The measuring instruments (24, 25) measure the vacuum which is present in the space between the turbine (14) and the filters (18, 19) and which rises when the filters (18, 19) are contaminated. <IMAGE>
